There are many situations where it is useful to measure the profile of the foot’s contact with the ground. Foot pronation, impact profiles and weight fluctuations are all useful indicators in health and fitness. An interesting experiment, using a volunteer, was to see the changes in the foot positioning when sober and again when inebriated. A higher minded example is in the analysis of “falls” in senior citizens. We designed this demonstrator using our existing sensor systems and combined it with our visualisation software.
We developed an experimental system to measure the volume and mix of gases during (normally controlled) exercise. Gases analysed included oxygen (O2) and carbon dioxide (CO2) as well as the flow rates using solid state sensors. Using custom PCBs (our Highclere platform), in-house software, 3D printed parts and various gas sensors we calculated parameters, such as VO2max, normally only available on high-end equipment.
Yellowcog has used many sensors and devices in its time. We developed the “Havant” range to allow us to rapidly piece together complex sensor networks. The sensors were all designed with a primary purpose (such as monitoring humidity) but have been engineered to also allow other sensors and actuators to be substituted. They communicate using ANT, Bluetooth or Wi-Fi protocols.
Yellowcog developed a system that monitored athletes' vital signs and also their immediate environment. Pollutant gases, particulates, temperature and humidity were all monitored in a small wearable device. The purpose of the system is to allow researchers to measure the change in performance caused by environmental factors.
Walk For Health was a government initiative (no longer funded) to encourage people to raise their general level of fitness by going on organised walks. Yellowcog got involved to monitor the walkers and to provide encouragement by giving feedback on the walkers' vital signs, effort and recovery levels.
